Guitar Maker – Foster Guitars

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

Foster GuitarsJimmy Foster, of Foster Guitars, makes some of the most amazing acoustic and arch-top jazz guitars that you’ll ever find – all from his base in New Orleans. He has been practicing the luthier’s art for well over 30 years now and, just as importantly, he’s been playing guitar for over 35 years as well – somewhat of a rarity among guitar builders. It’s from a player’s perspective, plus his commitment to perfection, that defines the character and professionalism of each and every Foster Guitar.

Early on, Jimmy’s musical idols were artists such as Chet Atkins, Les Paul, and Tony Mottola but, as his talents developed, Jimmy’s taste turned toward the jazz influences of players like Howard Roberts, Johnny Smith, and George Van Eps. With this in mind, Jimmy Foster began to concentrate on arch-top guitars as his main interest.

Jimmy Foster believes guitars should have beautiful wood. Making a guitar takes a lot of time and effort, and spending $100.00 or $200.00 more on buying higher quality tone woods is not really an issue at all. When the wood is delivered to the shop, Jimmy picks the best pieces for his guitars and ships the rest of it back to the supplier. It goes without saying that the customer will appreciate the beautiful woods that Foster Guitars use.  Of course it also goes without saying that the most figured pieces are reserved for Foster’s higher end models.

As far as the types of wood are concerned, there are a variety of different woods that Foster Guitars use to get different results for the customers needs.  Sitka Spruce is always good for the tops, and Jimmy believes that it is the best wood for the 17” guitar. Foster Guitars also use European spruce as well but the Sitka makes a better sounding guitar in Jimmy’s view. Western Cedar is used on the 15” models because it makes the smaller bodied guitar sound fat and warm. For the Backs and side Foster Guitars uses Mahogany on the 15” and the entry level 17” archtops as it is an excellent tone wood for that model. Highly figured or quilted maple is used for the backs and sides of Foster Guitars’ 17” higher level archtops and Macassar Ebony is used for the fingerboard, bridge, tailpiece and pickguard.

Great tone woods play an essential and critical part in making a great guitar, but, it is the way in which the maker carves and works the wood that is the final determining factor in how the guitar is going to sound. Each and every piece of wood has different characteristics about it. Another determining factor on the way a guitar is going to sound can be adjusted by the thickness of the top and the pattern and way in which the braces are shaped. If, for instance, the wood for the top has hard tight grain, then Jimmy likes to make the braces tall and slim like a wedge shape and then make the top slightly thinner. If the wood is softer then he’ll usually leave the top slightly thicker. In general though Foster Guitars uses wedge shaped braces made from Sitka Spruce. The types, or pattern, of the bracing also will determine how the guitar will sound. Jimmy tends to use X bracing and parallel bracing on his archtop guitars. On the parallel bracing he tilts the bass side out more than the treble side. This gives the guitar a punchy bright high end while retaining a warm low end.

Referred to as an “everyday man”, Jimmy loves to talk to his customers and welcomes their input into the planning and building of their custom instrument. After visiting his superb website we just knew we had to feature some of Foster Guitars wonderful instruments on iLuthier. To check out some of Jimmy’s guitars in the gallery, click here.

Violin Maker – David S. Brown

Sunday, January 1st, 2006

David Brown Violin MakerLEFT: David S. Brown, violin maker.

David S. Brown peers closely at the purfling line on the belly of a violin, the sunlight fighting it’s way through the multi-paned window of his sixteenth century style workshop and into the darkness within. It is a scene which would not appear too out of place in far off Cremona but is, in actual fact, from a leafy outer suburb of Melbourne, Australia. In fact the entire scene is so authentic looking that David, and his workshop, have been featured in a painting for an historically accurate book about the traditional woods used in a variety of crafts.

David was born in Tasmania. In the late 1960′s he won a scholarship to the Nuechatel School of Watchmaking in Switzerland when we was 22 years old. He ended up being the top student of his year and when David returned to Australia he continued to work as a watchmaker for another 20 years until technology and a restless spirit forced him to consider another professional direction.

“I have worked with timber all my life and was used to fine detail with my watchmaking”, says David, “I’m also fascinated by Japanese culture and philosophy and I’ve been making traditional Shoji screens and Shakuhachi flutes for some time now. The history of Japanese Shakuhachi flutes goes back some 700 years but I wanted to make something that had a long heritage from my own culture so when violin-maker Warren Fordham offered to teach me how to make violins I jumped at the opportunity. I then spent five years with him learning the various techniques of violinmaking and then eventually took over his studio here in Montsalvat, Victoria.”

Most of the time David makes his violins from Australian timbers, often using a combination of European spruce with Tasmanian myrtle or blackwood. “King Billy pine from Tasmania is much sought after by European violin-makers as it has such special qualities,” he says. “It’s one of the few timbers in the world that can be used for violins and is very hard to get as it’s endemic only to southern Tasmania.”

David Brown Violin MakerLEFT: Viola, belly (European spruce), body (Tasmanian blackwood), chin rest (Gippsland blackwood) and tailpiece (ringed gidgee)

“Every single violin is different and every piece of timber has to be worked differently, depending on its elasticity, strength and weight. I record every detail of each violin that I make, so that I have some correlation between good and bad instruments, but generally I manage to make violins that have a good tonal quality. The only way to become a good violin-maker is to make a lot of them. It’s the watchmaker in me that enjoys fine detail.”

Such is the personal touch, attention to detail and the passion in all of David’s instruments.

In the coming months iLuthier will feature more of David’s work as well as some pictures of his workshop. Unfortunately David doesn’t have a website but we’ve provided his contact details below:

Lute Maker – Oliver Wadsworth

Saturday, December 31st, 2005

Oliver Wadsworth Lutes And GuitarsClick on the images to go to the gallery.

Oliver Wadsworth is a British maker of lutes, archlutes, theorbos and renaissance and baroque guitars, and he has been making stringed instruments of one sort or another since 1985. His designs are usually based on existing instruments found in museums and private collections around the world. Iconographic sources are also used – especially for early and more obscure instruments where little physical evidence is available – though he’s happy to make copies of specific instruments..

In 1990 a growing interest in early plucked instruments led Oliver to the prestigious West Dean college, near Chichester, where he trained under the direction of Martin Haycock. The course at West Dean is a three year apprenticeship scheme in which the vast majority of course time is spent “at the bench” working on instruments commissioned by paying customers. This system puts great emphasis on the set-up and playability of instruments as well as quality of craftsmanship and is a sure fast way for makers to learn their craft in a professional environment. At West Dean emphasis is also placed on a knowledge of the history and evolution of the instruments concerned. The specialist techniques of repair and restoration are also covered in detail.

After graduating from West Dean, Wadsworth set up a workshop in Worcestershire making early plucked instruments, specialising in members of the lute family and early renaissance and baroque guitars.

Oliver Wadsworth Lutes And GuitarsWadsworth Instruments will usually choose woods that are historically relevant for the particular instrument, however if the customer has a preference for particular woods to be used then this can be negotiated. The principal timbers used for bodies are ash (rippled), sycamore or maple (rippled), Canadian rock maple (bird’s eye), yew, plum, cherry (European or American), walnut (black) and cypress. In addition to these, ebony, rosewood and snakewood can be used if desired.

Fingerboards are made from ebony or plum and pegs are made from plum, maple, boxwood or ebony. All soundboards are European spruce, unless otherwise specified.

Lute Rose Master – Ervin Somogyi

Saturday, December 24th, 2005

Ervin Somogyi Lute RosesWhile I want to do a profile on Ervin Somogyi and his guitar making sometime soon, I thought I would concentrate today on some of the fantastic work he does in carving lute roses.

Ervin uses a lot of historical influences as you would expect. After all it’s not unusual for any instrument maker to “borrow” from the past and use existing designs. It seems to be a little more prevalent with violin and lute makers though. Not all of the designs that Ervin uses, however, are from existing instruments but rather a varied and wide ranging assortment of ideas and designs found in books and paintings as well as architecture, furniture, interior decoration and other historical references.

While not every lute rose that Ervin creates will actually wind up being in an instrument the work is, nonetheless, extraordinary. Indeed many of these roses will end up in beautifully crafted jewelry boxes and pieces of furniture as well as grace the walls of those clients fortunate enough to be able to afford these works of art. Whether it’s on a wall, a box or an instrument though the dedication, craftsmanship and the attention to detail found in the roses is the same.

To check out some of the beautiful imagery that Ervin Somogyi creates with his lute roses, click here.

To find out more about him and his work as a guitar maker, click here.

And stay tuned for a profile on Ervin’s lutherie here soon.
